What Is Class IV Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy, sometimes called photobiomodulation, directs focused light energy at an area of pain or injury. The light is absorbed by the tissue and produces gentle warmth, which may help provide temporary relief of muscle and joint pain and stiffness. It is non-invasive: nothing is injected and the skin is not broken.

Class IV refers to a laser's power classification. Class IV (also written Class 4) therapy lasers are higher powered than the low-level lasers often called cold lasers, which is intended to deliver more light energy to the treatment area and reach tissue below the skin.

KC Wellness and Physiotherapy lists a wide range of treatment lasers among its specialties, including Class 4 lasers for pain reduction. Dr. Kowin Casey has employed, owned and operated sports medicine, chiropractic, laser and physiotherapy clinics. He uses laser therapy as one part of a plan built around your evaluation, and it can be combined with chiropractic care, physiotherapy and exercise.

Evaluation by Dr. Casey

Dr. Casey takes your history and examines the painful area to understand what is driving your symptoms. He also screens for reasons laser therapy should be avoided, so it is only used where it is appropriate.

A Personalized Plan

When laser therapy fits, Dr. Casey selects the treatment area and settings for your condition from the office's range of treatment lasers, and decides how it should work alongside adjustments, physiotherapy and exercise.

Ongoing Support and Education

Your response is reviewed as care progresses and the plan is adjusted as needed. You also learn stretches, exercises and habits that help you hold on to the progress you make.

Common Questions About Class IV Laser Therapy

What does Class IV mean?

It is a power classification for lasers. Class IV therapy lasers are higher powered than the low-level lasers sometimes called cold lasers. Because they are more powerful, they are used with protective eyewear and with care around sensitive areas.

Does laser therapy hurt?

Laser therapy is generally comfortable. Most people feel a gentle, soothing warmth over the treatment area. It should never feel painfully hot. If it does, say so and the treatment is adjusted right away.

Who should not have laser therapy?

Laser light is never aimed at the eyes, and laser therapy is generally avoided over a pregnant abdomen, over known or suspected cancer, and over the thyroid. Tell Dr. Casey about pregnancy, any cancer history and medications that increase light sensitivity. He will decide at your evaluation whether laser therapy is right for you.

How many laser sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition, how long it has been present and how you respond. Dr. Casey will recommend a plan after your evaluation and review it with you as you progress.
