Whiplash Treatment in Kansas City
Whiplash can cause persistent neck pain, headaches and stiffness that interfere with daily life. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, Dr. Kowin Casey provides auto injury diagnosis and treatment, combining chiropractic care, soft tissue work and rehabilitation to restore function and support your recovery.

Understanding Whiplash
Whiplash is a neck injury that happens when the head is suddenly and forcefully thrown backward and forward, like the crack of a whip. This rapid, uncontrolled movement can stretch and tear muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues in the neck. It is most commonly associated with rear-end car collisions and is a very common injury. Whiplash can range from mild discomfort that settles fairly quickly to pain and stiffness that lasts much longer. Many people underestimate it at first because symptoms may not appear right away, sometimes taking hours or days to develop fully. Without proper care, whiplash can lead to ongoing neck pain, reduced range of motion, persistent headaches, and trouble with work, sleep and daily activities.
Car accidents cause most whiplash injuries, but whiplash can also result from sports collisions, falls, amusement park rides, assaults and any sudden impact that jerks the head. Factors that can increase the risk or slow recovery include existing neck pain or a previous whiplash injury, older age, arthritis in the neck and higher-speed impacts. The injury involves rapid extension and flexion of the cervical spine, which can affect the facet joints, discs, nerve roots, muscles and ligaments that stabilize the neck. Because so many structures can be involved, whiplash symptoms are often varied, and recovery benefits from thorough, individualized care.
Some mild cases improve with rest, but many whiplash injuries benefit from structured care that addresses the underlying joint and muscle dysfunction. Getting evaluated soon after an injury lets problems be identified early, before guarded, compensating movement patterns set in and lead to secondary pain in the shoulders, upper back and jaw. Dr. Casey's care focuses on restoring normal motion in the neck, reducing muscle spasm, improving range of motion and strengthening the supporting muscles to help prevent re-injury. Whether your injury happened yesterday or months ago, an evaluation can clarify your options.
Signs & Symptoms of Whiplash
- Neck Pain & Stiffness: Persistent aching, sharp pain with movement, or stiffness that worsens over the first few days and limits turning or bending the neck.
- Headaches: Often starting at the base of the skull and radiating upward, ranging from dull pressure to severe, migraine-like pain.
- Shoulder & Upper Back Pain: Muscle tension, tenderness or spasm between the shoulder blades or along the top of the shoulders from protective guarding.
- Arm Pain or Numbness: Tingling, weakness or radiating pain down one or both arms, which can indicate nerve root irritation or compression.
- Dizziness or Vertigo: Spinning sensations, loss of balance or lightheadedness that may come from neck dysfunction or inner ear involvement.
- Jaw Pain (TMJ Issues): Jaw joint dysfunction causing difficulty chewing, clicking sounds, or pain radiating to the face and temples.
- Blurred Vision: Visual disturbances or difficulty focusing that can accompany neck strain and neurological symptoms after whiplash.
- Sensitivity to Light or Sound: More discomfort in bright or noisy settings, often alongside headaches or visual disturbances.
- Memory Problems: Difficulty concentrating, remembering appointments or recalling information that was easy to retain before the injury.
- Brain Fog: Mental cloudiness, slower processing, difficulty multitasking, or feeling mentally exhausted after minor tasks.
- Irritability & Mood Changes: Increased frustration, anxiety or low mood that is out of character and may worsen with pain.
- Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or getting restful sleep because of pain.
- Fatigue: Persistent tiredness and low energy that does not improve with rest, affecting daily productivity and motivation.

How We Treat Whiplash
Comprehensive Assessment
Your first visit includes a detailed history of the accident or injury, a physical examination of neck alignment and range of motion, and neurological testing to check for nerve involvement. Dr. Casey uses orthopedic and neurological tests to check your neck, and imaging may be recommended if structural damage is suspected, so your injury is well understood before treatment begins.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your findings, Dr. Casey builds a plan around your symptoms and recovery goals. It may integrate chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue work such as Active Release Technique and myofascial release, kinesio taping, Class IV laser therapy for pain reduction, cervical traction when a nerve is involved, and rehabilitative exercise. Realistic milestones guide your care, and the approach is adjusted as you heal to avoid overtreatment.
Ongoing Care & Prevention
Recovery from whiplash takes consistent care and monitoring. Regular follow-ups track your progress, adjust treatment and advance your rehabilitation exercises. As acute symptoms settle, the focus moves to strengthening the neck and improving posture to help prevent ongoing problems, along with education on ergonomics, self-care and warning signs that need immediate attention.

Your Treatment Journey
Your First Visit
New patients can fill out the intake forms before arriving. Your first appointment includes a comprehensive assessment of your injury, a review of your health history, a physical examination and neurological testing. Dr. Casey explains your diagnosis in clear terms, discusses what to expect and outlines a plan tailored to your injury, with an early focus on easing pain and inflammation.
Early Care
During the acute phase, visits are more frequent and focus on reducing pain and muscle spasm, restoring range of motion and starting gentle rehabilitation exercises. You also get home care instructions and activity modifications to support healing between visits.
Progress Reviews
As you progress, visits are spaced further apart and treatment shifts toward strengthening, posture and preventing re-injury. Dr. Casey reassesses your condition and adjusts your plan, and when you reach your goals you move to a home exercise program or periodic check-ins.
Long-Term Management
Once acute symptoms resolve, the focus is on preventing recurrence through ergonomic education, strengthening exercises and check-ups as needed. Some people choose periodic visits, while others manage their recovery independently with the tools they have learned. If symptoms return, come back early rather than waiting for pain to worsen.
Treatment Options for Whiplash
Whiplash involves joints, muscles and sometimes nerves, so care combines several approaches. Chiropractic adjustments and mobilization restore motion to restricted joints in the neck and upper back. Active Release Technique, myofascial release and dry needling address muscle spasm, trigger points and tight fascia. Kinesio taping supports injured tissues without restricting motion, and Class IV laser therapy is used for pain reduction. Therapeutic exercise progresses from gentle range-of-motion movements to strengthening that stabilizes the neck. When a nerve is involved, manual or mechanical cervical traction may be recommended, along with posture work and changes to your workstation or driving position. If headaches or jaw pain are part of your injury, they are addressed as part of your plan.
How Long Recovery Takes
Recovery time varies. Mild whiplash often improves sooner than moderate or severe injuries, which can take considerably longer. Age, pre-existing neck conditions, injury severity and how consistently you follow your plan all affect healing. Dr. Casey will discuss realistic expectations at your first visit and review your progress as you go.
When to Seek Immediate Care
After any accident, seek emergency care right away for severe neck pain, loss of consciousness, confusion, repeated vomiting, a worsening headache, trouble walking, or numbness or weakness in the arms or legs. Memory problems, brain fog and sensitivity to light after a crash can also be signs of a concussion and should be evaluated by a medical provider.

Common Questions About Whiplash
How long does whiplash treatment take?
It depends on how severe the injury is and on individual factors. Mild whiplash often improves sooner than moderate or severe injuries. Visits are usually more frequent at first and are spaced out as symptoms improve. Age, pre-existing neck conditions, the speed and direction of impact, how soon care begins and how closely you follow home care recommendations all influence recovery. Dr. Casey will give you a realistic outlook after your first evaluation.
Will I need medication for whiplash?
Care at our office focuses on non-drug treatment that addresses the injury itself. Dr. Casey does not prescribe medication. In the early phase, some people use over-the-counter pain relievers, and for more severe cases your primary care physician may prescribe short-term medication. Ask your physician or pharmacist what is safe for you.
Does insurance cover whiplash treatment?
We accept all major insurance plans. Call our office at (913) 424-2410 to confirm your coverage before your visit.
What if my symptoms are not improving?
If you are not improving as expected, Dr. Casey will reassess your condition to find what may be holding your recovery back. Imaging such as an MRI or CT scan may be recommended to rule out a disc injury, ligament tear or other structural damage. Your plan may be modified, and when appropriate you may be referred to a specialist such as a pain management physician, neurologist or orthopedic surgeon.
Can I be treated for whiplash via telehealth?
Hands-on care requires an office visit, and a new injury should be examined in person. Virtual appointments are available for some visits: at your appointment time, a nurse calls to take your history, then Dr. Casey joins by voice and video. If x-rays or lab work are needed, he will explain the next steps. Telemedicine visits are billed just like a regular office visit.
Should I wait to see if my whiplash gets better on its own?
It is best not to wait. Even when symptoms seem mild, whiplash can feel worse over the first few days as inflammation develops, and delaying care gives guarded, compensating movement patterns time to set in. A prompt evaluation can help identify your injury early so appropriate care can begin sooner.
