Lower Back Pain Treatment in Kansas City
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek care, and it can limit your work, your sleep and the activities you enjoy. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, Dr. Kowin Casey looks for the underlying cause of your pain and combines chiropractic care, physiotherapy and non-surgical spinal decompression to help you move more comfortably.

Understanding Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain, also called lumbar pain or lumbago, is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. The lumbar spine supports much of the weight of the upper body while letting you bend, twist and lift, which makes it especially vulnerable to strain, injury and wear over time. Most adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. It can range from a dull, constant ache to sudden, sharp pain that makes movement difficult, and it often interferes with work, recreation and simple daily tasks like bending, lifting or sitting comfortably.
The causes of lower back pain are varied. Common mechanical causes include muscle or ligament strain from heavy lifting, sudden movements or poor posture over time. Structural problems such as herniated or bulging discs, spinal stenosis, arthritis and degenerative disc disease can also contribute to ongoing pain. Risk factors include age, low physical fitness, excess body weight that adds stress to the spine, jobs that involve heavy lifting or long hours of sitting, and stress, anxiety or low mood, which can influence how pain is felt. Smoking is another risk factor many people overlook, because it is associated with faster disc degeneration.
It is worth getting evaluated when pain lasts more than a few weeks, keeps getting worse, or comes with numbness, weakness or pain that travels down the legs. Left unaddressed, a short-term episode can sometimes turn into a longer-term problem. Dr. Casey's approach looks for the underlying causes of pain, then uses specific interventions and lifestyle adjustments to optimize the conditions for normal function. Care focuses on restoring motion, easing pain and muscle tension, building strength, and teaching you how to lower the chance of future episodes.
Signs & Symptoms of Lower Back Pain
- Dull, aching pain: A constant discomfort in the lower back that may worsen with certain positions or activities.
- Sharp, stabbing pain: Sudden, intense pain that may occur with specific movements like bending, twisting or lifting.
- Limited range of motion: Difficulty bending forward, backward or twisting at the waist without pain or stiffness.
- Muscle spasms: Involuntary tightening of the lower back muscles that can be painful and limiting.
- Pain radiating down the legs: Discomfort that travels from the lower back through the buttocks and down one or both legs (sciatica).
- Difficulty standing upright: Trouble holding a normal posture without significant discomfort or muscle guarding.
- Pain that worsens with sitting: Prolonged sitting increases pressure on the lumbar discs and can intensify lower back discomfort.
- Sleep disturbances: Difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position or waking during the night because of pain.
- Reduced work productivity: Difficulty completing job tasks, missed work, or needing frequent breaks because of pain.
- Avoiding physical activities: Giving up exercise, sports or recreation you once enjoyed out of fear of pain.
- Difficulty with household tasks: Struggling with cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping or caring for children because of pain.
- Emotional distress: Frustration, anxiety or low mood related to ongoing pain and reduced independence.

How We Treat Lower Back Pain
Comprehensive Assessment
Your first visit starts with a detailed health history and a physical examination of your posture, spinal alignment and movement. Dr. Casey uses orthopedic and neurological tests to identify the likely source of your pain and to screen for signs of a more serious problem. If your exam calls for it, imaging such as x-rays may be recommended.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your findings, Dr. Casey builds a plan around your condition, goals and lifestyle. Depending on what is driving your pain, it may include chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical lumbar decompression with manual or mechanical traction, Class IV laser therapy for pain reduction, and soft tissue work such as Active Release Technique, myofascial release or dry needling. Dr. Casey explains the plan before treatment starts.
Ongoing Care & Support
Treatment does not end when the pain eases. Dr. Casey tracks your progress, adjusts your plan as you improve, and teaches stretches, strengthening exercises, and posture and lifting habits so you can protect your back. The goal is lasting function and wellness, not just short-term relief.

Your Treatment Journey
Your First Visit
New patients can fill out the intake forms before arriving. Your first visit includes a health history and a physical examination. Dr. Casey explains what he finds, answers your questions and walks you through a recommended care plan.
Early Care
The first phase focuses on easing pain, reducing muscle guarding and restoring motion. Visits are usually more frequent at the start, and you begin learning exercises and posture and lifting habits that support your recovery at home.
Progress Reviews
As your back improves, visits are spaced further apart and Dr. Casey re-checks your motion, strength and function against where you started. The emphasis shifts to strengthening, stability and keeping the pain from returning.
Long-Term Wellness
Once you reach your goals, you decide what comes next. Some people choose periodic visits to stay on track, while others manage well on their own with the exercises and habits they have learned.
Treatment Options for Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain rarely has a single cause, so care usually combines several approaches. Chiropractic adjustments and spinal corrective care restore motion to stiff joints in the lower back and pelvis. Non-surgical lumbar decompression and manual or mechanical traction are designed to gently unload the spine and may help when a disc or nerve is involved. Soft tissue care, including Active Release Technique, myofascial release and dry needling, addresses tight muscles and trigger points, and kinesio taping can support the back without restricting motion. Class IV laser therapy is used for pain reduction. Physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise build the core strength and flexibility that keep the spine stable, and guidance on workstation setup, lifting technique and daily habits helps you protect your back between visits.
When to Seek Immediate Care
Most lower back pain is not an emergency. Seek emergency care right away if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, rapidly worsening weakness in the legs, or fever, or if it follows a serious fall or accident.
How Long Recovery Takes
Recovery time varies from person to person. A recent strain often improves sooner than pain that has built up over months or years, and your overall health, activity level and consistency with home exercises all play a part. Dr. Casey sets realistic expectations at your first visit and reviews your progress as you go.

Common Questions About Lower Back Pain
How long does treatment for lower back pain take?
It depends on the cause, how long you have had the pain and your overall health. Recent pain from a strain often responds sooner than long-standing pain or pain tied to a disc problem. Visits are usually more frequent at the start and are spaced out as you improve. Dr. Casey will give you a realistic outlook after your exam and adjust your plan based on how you respond.
Is chiropractic treatment safe for lower back pain?
Chiropractic care is generally considered a safe, conservative option for lower back pain when it is provided by a licensed chiropractic physician after a proper examination, and serious complications are rare. Dr. Casey screens for conditions that call for a different approach and tailors treatment to you. Some people feel mild soreness after a visit, similar to how muscles feel after exercise, and it usually fades quickly.
Does insurance cover treatment for lower back pain?
We accept all major insurance plans. Call our office at (913) 424-2410 to confirm your coverage before your visit.
Will I need medication for my lower back pain?
Care at KC Wellness and Physiotherapy focuses on non-drug approaches, such as adjustments, decompression, soft tissue work and exercise, and on looking for the underlying cause of your pain. Dr. Casey does not prescribe medication. Some people use over-the-counter pain relievers during a flare-up; ask your primary care physician or pharmacist what is safe for you, and do not stop a prescribed medication without talking to the doctor who prescribed it.
What if chiropractic treatment doesn't work for my back pain?
Dr. Casey reviews your progress regularly. If you are not improving as expected, he will reassess your condition and change the approach, which may include adding decompression or other therapies, recommending imaging, or referring you to another healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Can you treat lower back pain through telehealth?
Hands-on care such as adjustments and decompression requires an office visit, but virtual appointments are available. At your appointment time, a nurse calls to take your history, then Dr. Casey joins by voice and video. If x-rays or lab work are needed, Dr. Casey will explain the next steps. Telemedicine visits are billed just like a regular office visit.
