Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints, and many adults deal with it at some point. The cervical spine, made up of vertebrae, discs, muscles, ligaments and nerves, is highly mobile but also vulnerable to strain and injury. When neck pain becomes persistent or severe, it can spread into the shoulders, arms and upper back, contribute to headaches, and make it hard to work, drive, exercise or sleep comfortably. Many people with ongoing neck pain also notice trouble concentrating and a general drop in how they feel day to day.

The causes of neck pain are varied and often overlap. Poor posture, especially the forward head position that comes with long hours at a computer or looking down at a phone, places extra strain on the neck and is often called "tech neck." Other common causes include whiplash from car accidents, sports injuries, degenerative disc disease, cervical spondylosis (age-related wear and tear), muscle strains from overuse or sudden movements, herniated discs that press on nerve roots, and irritated facet joints. Risk factors include a sedentary lifestyle, repetitive work positions, previous neck injuries, stress and muscle tension, smoking and aging. Neck pain can also be referred from the shoulder, the jaw (temporomandibular joint disorder) or, occasionally, other conditions, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters.

Mild neck pain from a recent strain may settle with rest and self-care, but pain that lingers or keeps coming back deserves a professional evaluation. Left unaddressed, ongoing neck pain can lead to compensating movement patterns that strain other areas, gradual loss of motion, muscle weakness, and nerve irritation with pain, numbness or weakness in the arms. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, Dr. Casey combines a thorough assessment with care tailored to your condition, lifestyle and goals, aiming to restore joint motion, ease muscle tension and rebuild the strength that supports your neck.

Signs & Symptoms of Neck Pain

  • Persistent or Intermittent Pain: Aching, sharp, or burning discomfort in the neck that may be constant or come and go with certain movements.
  • Stiffness & Reduced Range of Motion: Difficulty turning your head side to side, looking up or down, or tilting your head toward your shoulder.
  • Radiating Pain: Pain spreading from the neck into the shoulders, upper back, or down one or both arms (cervical radiculopathy).
  • Headaches: Tension-type or cervicogenic headaches that begin at the base of the skull and radiate forward toward the forehead or temples.
  • Numbness or Tingling: Pins-and-needles sensations or numbness in the arms, hands, or fingers, often indicating nerve involvement.
  • Muscle Spasms: Involuntary tightening or cramping of neck and shoulder muscles, often worsening with stress or prolonged postures.
  • Grinding or Popping Sensations: Crepitus (crackling or grating sounds/feelings) with neck movement, often associated with degenerative changes.
  • Weakness in Arms or Hands: Difficulty gripping objects, reduced strength, or coordination problems that may signal nerve compression requiring prompt evaluation.
  • Difficulty Sleeping: Trouble finding comfortable sleeping positions, frequent waking due to pain, or morning stiffness that disrupts rest.
  • Work Limitations: Reduced productivity, difficulty maintaining posture at a desk, or inability to perform physical job duties.
  • Driving Discomfort: Pain when checking blind spots, difficulty turning head, or avoidance of driving due to neck stiffness.
  • Exercise Avoidance: Stopping activities you enjoy like golf, tennis, or weightlifting due to fear of worsening symptoms.
  • Mood Changes: Irritability, frustration, anxiety about worsening symptoms, or low mood from chronic discomfort.
  • Social Withdrawal: Declining invitations or avoiding social activities because pain makes participation difficult or unenjoyable.
  • Concentration Problems: Difficulty focusing on tasks, reading, or having conversations when pain is distracting or severe.

  • Visit frequency adjusted to your progress, with a gradual shift toward self-care and prevention

How We Treat Neck Pain

Comprehensive Assessment

Your first visit includes a detailed history and a physical examination of your neck alignment, range of motion, muscle tone, nerve function and posture. Dr. Casey uses orthopedic and neurological tests to identify the likely cause of your pain, whether muscle strain, joint restriction, disc involvement or nerve irritation. If your exam points to a fracture, a significant disc problem or another structural issue, imaging may be recommended or you may be referred for further care.

Individualized Treatment Plan

Based on your findings, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments to restore joint motion, soft tissue work such as Active Release Technique, myofascial release or dry needling to release muscle tension, kinesio taping for support, Class IV laser therapy for pain reduction, and cervical decompression or traction when a nerve is involved. Therapeutic exercise, posture training and workstation guidance address the habits that contribute to neck pain.

Ongoing Care & Prevention

Dr. Casey reassesses your progress regularly and adjusts your care as you improve. As pain eases and motion returns, the focus shifts to prevention: self-care techniques, home exercises and ergonomic changes that lower the chance of the pain returning, so you can keep your neck healthy on your own.

Your Treatment Journey

Your First Visit

New patients can fill out the intake forms before arriving. Your first visit includes a thorough history, physical examination, posture assessment and neurological screening. Dr. Casey talks through your symptoms, what makes them better or worse, previous treatments and your goals, then explains what he finds and recommends a care plan.

Early Care

The first phase focuses on easing pain and muscle spasm and restoring motion, with visits more frequent at the start. Sessions may combine adjustments, soft tissue work and therapeutic exercise, and you get guidance on home care, posture and activity changes. How quickly neck pain responds depends on how severe it is and how long you have had it.

Progress Reviews

As symptoms improve, visits are spaced further apart. Dr. Casey re-checks your range of motion, strength, pain and daily function to make sure you are on track. Exercises become more challenging, and you begin returning to activities you may have avoided because of pain.

Long-Term Management

Once pain has settled and function is restored, you and Dr. Casey decide on next steps. Some people prefer periodic check-in visits, while others continue on their own with a home exercise program. Ergonomic recommendations, stress management and lifestyle coaching support long-term neck health, and you can always return if symptoms come back.

Treatment Options for Neck Pain

Neck pain often involves joints, muscles and daily habits at the same time, so care usually addresses all three. Chiropractic adjustments restore motion in stiff segments of the neck and upper back. Active Release Technique, myofascial release and dry needling target tight muscles and trigger points in the neck and shoulders, and kinesio taping can support the area without restricting motion. Class IV laser therapy is used for pain reduction. When a disc or nerve is involved and pain or tingling travels into the arm, non-surgical cervical decompression or manual and mechanical traction may help reduce pressure on the nerve. Therapeutic exercise strengthens the deep neck muscles and the upper back, and attention to shoulder mobility, stress, sleep and daily habits reflects Dr. Casey's whole-person approach to achieving an optimal balance.

When to Seek Immediate Care

Seek emergency care right away if neck pain follows a serious fall or accident, or comes with fever and a stiff neck, a sudden severe headache, trouble walking or with coordination, or new weakness in the arms or legs. Numbness or weakness in the arms or hands that keeps getting worse also needs prompt evaluation.

Common Questions About Neck Pain

How long does neck pain treatment take?

It depends on the cause and how long you have had symptoms. Neck pain from a recent strain often improves sooner than pain that has been building for months or years, and conditions involving a disc or a pinched nerve can take longer. After your first evaluation, Dr. Casey will give you a realistic outlook and review your progress regularly.

Is chiropractic treatment safe for neck pain?

Chiropractic care for neck pain is generally considered safe when it is performed by a licensed, trained professional after a careful exam, and serious complications are rare. Dr. Casey reviews your health history and examines you before treating, and adjusts his approach or refers you for medical evaluation when needed. If you have concerns about adjustments, ask about other options such as soft tissue work and exercise. Your comfort and safety come first.

Will I need medication or injections for my neck pain?

Care at our office focuses on non-drug treatment. Dr. Casey does not prescribe medication; if medication is part of your care, your primary care provider manages it. If conservative care does not provide enough relief, Dr. Casey may refer you to a medical doctor who can discuss options such as injections or advanced imaging.

Does insurance cover chiropractic care for neck pain?

We accept all major insurance plans. Call our office at (913) 424-2410 to confirm your coverage before your visit.

What if chiropractic care isn't helping my neck pain?

Not every condition responds to conservative care alone. If your symptoms are not improving, Dr. Casey will reassess your condition, adjust your plan and discuss next steps, which may include imaging such as an MRI or referral to a specialist like an orthopedist or neurologist. The goal is to get you the right care, even if that means looking beyond our office.

Can telehealth appointments help with neck pain?

Virtual appointments are available for some visits. At your appointment time, a nurse calls to take your history, then you join Dr. Casey by voice and video from a smartphone or a computer with a webcam. Hands-on treatment such as adjustments and soft tissue work requires an office visit, and if x-rays or lab work are needed, Dr. Casey will explain the next steps. Telemedicine visits are billed just like a regular office visit.
