What Is a Cold Plunge?

A cold plunge is a short, controlled soak in cold water, also called cold water immersion. You lower yourself into the water, stay in for a short time, and then get out, dry off and warm up.

Cold water immersion is widely used by athletes after training and competition, and it may help tired, sore muscles feel better. Many people also simply find it refreshing. People respond differently, and cold is not right for everyone.

At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, the cold plunge is offered for recovery and relaxation, alongside the full spectrum sauna, hydrotherapy and the practice's other recovery options. It is not a treatment for any disease or injury, and it does not replace care from your medical physician. Dr. Kowin Casey is a strength and conditioning specialist with a certification in physiotherapy and an emphasis in sports rehabilitation, and he can help you decide whether a cold plunge fits your training and your health.

How the Cold Plunge Fits Your Care

Start With Your Health History

Cold water puts real stress on the body, and it is not right for everyone. Before your first plunge, tell Dr. Casey about your health history and any medications, and check with your medical physician if you have concerns.

Built Around Your Training

If you are an athlete, Dr. Casey can talk with you about how a cold plunge might fit around your training, your games and the rest of your recovery.

Ongoing Support

Ask us how to prepare, what to expect and how to warm up afterward. As your needs change, talk with Dr. Casey about whether the cold plunge still fits your goals.

Benefits

Recovery After Hard Exercise

Cold water immersion is widely used by athletes after training and competition, and it may help sore, tired muscles feel better.

A Refreshing Reset

Many people find a short cold plunge refreshing, whether after a workout or a long day.

Part of a Recovery Routine

The cold plunge is offered at the same office as the full spectrum sauna, hydrotherapy and other recovery options.

Guidance From a Sports Background

Dr. Casey is a strength and conditioning specialist and a former NCAA athlete, so he understands the demands of training.

Your First Cold Plunge

Before Your Plunge

Share your health history and medications. Tell us if you are pregnant, have heart disease, high blood pressure, Raynaud's or another circulation problem, or a sensitivity to cold.

During Your Plunge

Lower yourself in slowly and breathe steadily. Get out right away if you feel dizzy, short of breath, numb or unwell, and tell us.

Afterward

Dry off and warm up gradually with dry clothes and gentle movement. If you are also seeing Dr. Casey for care, let him know how you felt afterward.

Safety First

Cold water causes a sudden gasp and a quick rise in heart rate and blood pressure, which is why a cold plunge is not right for everyone. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, are pregnant, have Raynaud's or another circulation problem, have a sensitivity to cold, or have a fever or other acute illness, talk with your medical physician and let Dr. Casey know before you try it.

Avoid alcohol beforehand, never plunge alone, and get out right away if you feel unwell.
