Bulging Disc Treatment in Kansas City
A bulging disc can cause pain that spreads into the arms or legs and makes it hard to work, exercise and get through the day. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, Dr. Kowin Casey combines chiropractic care, non-surgical spinal decompression and physiotherapy to help relieve pain and restore function.

Understanding Bulging Disc
A bulging disc occurs when the outer layer of an intervertebral disc, the cushion between the vertebrae in your spine, weakens and extends beyond its normal boundary. Unlike a herniated disc, where the inner gel-like material breaks through the outer layer, a bulging disc stays intact but protrudes outward, sometimes pressing on nearby nerves or the spinal cord. Bulging discs are very common, and they often show up on MRI scans of people who have no symptoms at all. When a bulging disc does cause pain, it can make bending, lifting, sitting for long periods or even sleeping uncomfortable. The pain may stay in the neck or lower back, or it can radiate down the arms or legs when nerves are compressed.
Bulging discs usually develop gradually and have several causes. Age-related degeneration is the most common factor: as we age, spinal discs naturally lose water content and elasticity, making them more likely to bulge under normal stress. Repetitive strain from jobs that involve heavy lifting, twisting or prolonged sitting speeds this process. Poor posture places uneven pressure on the spine and contributes to disc weakening. Acute injuries from car accidents, falls or sports can also cause or aggravate a bulging disc. Additional risk factors include excess body weight, which increases load on the spine, genetics, smoking, which reduces disc nutrition, and a lack of the core strength that normally supports and protects the spine. Many of these risk factors can be changed through lifestyle habits and proper care.
Bulging disc symptoms are worth having evaluated, because some cases worsen and lead to ongoing pain, nerve irritation or muscle weakness. Many people try to manage with over-the-counter medication and rest alone, which can ease symptoms without addressing the mechanical factors behind them. Conservative, non-surgical care aims to relieve pain, reduce stress on the affected area and strengthen the structures that support the spine to help prevent recurrence. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, Dr. Casey focuses on identifying exactly what is driving your symptoms so your care can target it.
Signs & Symptoms of Bulging Disc
- Localized Back or Neck Pain: Persistent aching, burning, or sharp pain at the site of the bulging disc, often worsening with movement or prolonged sitting.
- Radiating Pain: Pain that travels along the path of the compressed nerve, down the arm from a neck disc or down the leg from a lower back disc (often called sciatica), sometimes reaching as far as the fingers or toes.
- Numbness and Tingling: Pins-and-needles sensation or complete numbness in the extremities served by the affected nerve root.
- Muscle Weakness: Decreased strength in arms or legs, making it difficult to grip objects, climb stairs, or maintain balance.
- Reduced Range of Motion: Stiffness and inability to bend, twist, or move freely without triggering pain or discomfort.
- Pain That Worsens With Certain Positions: Symptoms that intensify when sitting, bending forward, coughing, sneezing, or lifting objects.
- Muscle Spasms: Involuntary contractions in the back or neck muscles as your body tries to protect the injured area.
- Difficulty Sleeping: Inability to find comfortable sleeping positions, frequent waking due to pain, and resulting daytime fatigue.
- Work Performance Issues: Reduced productivity, missed workdays, and difficulty performing job duties, especially those requiring physical activity or prolonged sitting.
- Limited Physical Activity: Avoidance of exercise, sports, and recreational activities you once enjoyed due to pain or fear of worsening the condition.
- Mood Changes and Frustration: Irritability, anxiety, or depression resulting from chronic pain and loss of independence in daily activities.
- Dependence on Pain Medication: Increasing reliance on over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers to manage symptoms throughout the day.
- Household Task Challenges: Struggling with routine chores like vacuuming, doing laundry, grocery shopping, or playing with children or grandchildren.
- Social Withdrawal: Declining invitations and reducing social interactions because of pain, limited mobility, or embarrassment about your condition.

How Dr. Casey Treats a Bulging Disc
Comprehensive Assessment
Care begins with a thorough evaluation: your history, a physical examination and orthopedic testing to identify the location and severity of the problem. Dr. Casey assesses your posture, spinal motion, range of motion and neurological function. He reviews any imaging you already have, and imaging may be recommended when needed to confirm findings or rule out other conditions.
Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your findings, Dr. Casey develops a plan tailored to your condition, lifestyle and goals, with milestones to track your progress. Depending on your exam, it may include non-surgical spinal decompression or traction, chiropractic care, physiotherapy and Class IV laser therapy. He explains each part of the plan so you understand the reasoning and feel confident in the path forward.
Ongoing Care & Prevention
Dr. Casey monitors your response and adjusts the plan as needed. Regular reassessments check your progress toward your milestones, and the focus extends beyond pain relief to long-term spine health, with guidance on body mechanics, workstation setup and home exercises that help prevent recurrence.

Non-surgical decompression for the neck, mid back and lower back, along with manual and mechanical traction, is available in our Kansas City office when it fits your exam findings.
Telemedicine Visits
Virtual appointments are available for some visits, such as follow-up conversations and reviewing your home exercises. Examination and hands-on care take place in the office.
Your Treatment Journey
First Visit and Evaluation
Your first visit includes a detailed history, a review of how your symptoms developed, and a physical examination with orthopedic and neurological testing. Dr. Casey reviews any existing imaging and will recommend imaging if it is needed. He explains what he found and outlines your plan.
Early Treatment
Early care focuses on easing pain and irritation. Depending on your plan, sessions may include non-surgical decompression or traction, chiropractic care chosen with your disc condition in mind, Class IV laser therapy and guided exercises. Dr. Casey monitors your progress closely and adjusts the approach based on your response.
Progress Review
As your condition improves, visits become less frequent. Dr. Casey reassesses your range of motion, strength and function, and your exercise program advances to more challenging strengthening and stabilization work as lingering symptoms are addressed and your home routine is refined.
Long-Term Management
Once you reach your goals, a maintenance plan helps prevent recurrence and keep your spine healthy. It may include occasional check-ins, ongoing home exercises and lifestyle changes, along with education on ergonomics, safe lifting and the early warning signs of a flare-up.
Treatment Options at KC Wellness and Physiotherapy
Bulging disc care draws on the services offered in our Kansas City office. Non-surgical decompression for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, along with manual and mechanical traction, gently stretches and unloads the spine. Chiropractic and spinal corrective care is chosen with your disc condition and comfort in mind, and Class IV laser therapy is used as part of care aimed at pain reduction.
Active Release Technique and myofascial release address the muscle guarding and restrictions that often develop around an irritated disc, and dry needling may provide relief for some muscular pain and stiffness. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises strengthen the core, improve flexibility and correct the movement problems that add strain to the discs. The aim is to address both your symptoms and the factors behind them.
When to Seek Emergency Care
A disc problem that causes loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness needs emergency care right away, because these can be signs of cauda equina syndrome. Worsening arm or leg weakness should also be evaluated promptly by a medical provider.

Common Questions About Bulging Disc
How long does bulging disc treatment take?
It depends on the severity of your symptoms, your overall health and how soon you seek care. Cases with significant nerve compression or long-standing degeneration may take longer. After your evaluation, Dr. Casey will give you realistic expectations, and consistency with your home exercises plays a meaningful part in how you progress.
Will I need surgery for my bulging disc?
Many bulging disc cases improve with conservative, non-surgical care. Surgery is typically considered only for progressive neurological problems, such as worsening weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control, severe pain that does not respond to an appropriate course of conservative care, or significant functional limits despite comprehensive treatment. Dr. Casey starts with conservative options and will refer you for a surgical opinion if your exam or progress calls for it.
Is chiropractic care safe for bulging discs?
Dr. Casey completes a thorough examination before treatment to check whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you. He adapts care to your condition, comfort and response, and monitors your progress. If your exam shows signs that need medical evaluation first, he will tell you and refer you. Like any treatment, chiropractic care carries some risks, and he will discuss them with you before you begin.
How do I find out about insurance coverage?
We accept all major insurance plans. Call our office at (913) 424-2410 to confirm your coverage before your visit.
Can telehealth work for bulging disc treatment?
Hands-on care, including chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression, requires an office visit, but telemedicine visits are offered and can play a supporting role, such as checking in on progress between in-person visits or reviewing your home exercises. At the visit time, a nurse calls to take your history, then Dr. Casey joins by voice and video. If imaging or lab work may be needed, he will explain the next steps. Telemedicine visits are billed just like a regular office visit.
What if chiropractic care doesn't work for me?
Every case is different. If you are not seeing the progress you expected, Dr. Casey will reassess your condition and change the approach, or refer you to another healthcare provider, such as an orthopedic surgeon or pain management specialist, when your condition needs care beyond his scope. Your wellbeing comes first, whether that means care with us, with another provider or both, and continuing treatment that is not working does not serve you.
