What Chiropractic Care Involves

Chiropractic care focuses on diagnosing and treating problems of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractic physician takes your history, examines you, and then uses hands-on adjustments of the spine and joints, soft tissue work and exercise to help restore movement and ease pain.

Chiropractic care is conservative: it does not involve surgery or prescription medication. When an examination suggests something else is needed, such as imaging or a medical evaluation, that becomes part of the conversation.

What Physical Therapy Involves

Physical therapy is a licensed rehabilitation profession that helps people recover movement, strength and function after injury, surgery or illness. Physical therapists assess how you move, then build a plan of therapeutic exercise, hands-on techniques, balance and gait training, and education on body mechanics.

Physical therapy is commonly prescribed after orthopedic procedures such as joint replacement or ligament repair, and after neurological events such as a stroke. If your surgeon or physician has prescribed physical therapy, follow that plan with a licensed physical therapist.

Where Physiotherapy Fits In

At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, physiotherapy means the rehabilitation-focused care Dr. Casey provides as a chiropractic physician: therapeutic exercise, stretching and strengthening, and supportive therapies used alongside chiropractic treatment. Dr. Casey received a certification in physiotherapy with an emphasis in sports rehabilitation. He is also a former NCAA athlete who lettered in football and track at the University of Central Missouri, and a strength and conditioning specialist.

How to Decide

A chiropractic evaluation may make sense if:

  • You have back or neck pain, or pain that travels into an arm or leg
  • Your headaches seem connected to your neck or posture
  • You notice joint stiffness or a reduced range of motion
  • You were hurt in a car accident, at work or playing a sport
  • You want a non-surgical, drug-free place to start

A physical therapist may be the better fit if:

  • You have had surgery and your surgeon has prescribed physical therapy
  • You are recovering from a stroke or another neurological condition
  • You need balance or walking (gait) training, for example after a fall
  • You need rehabilitation in a hospital or home health setting

Sometimes both

Some people work with a chiropractor and a physical therapist during the same recovery. If you do, keep each provider informed about the other care you receive and any restrictions your surgeon or physician has given you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dr. Casey a physical therapist?

No. Dr. Kowin Casey is a chiropractic physician, not a licensed physical therapist. Dr. Casey provides chiropractic care along with physiotherapy and rehabilitation, including therapeutic exercise. If your physician or surgeon has prescribed physical therapy, a licensed physical therapist is the right professional for that prescription.

What is the difference between physiotherapy and physical therapy?

In the United States, physical therapy is a licensed profession practiced by licensed physical therapists. At KC Wellness and Physiotherapy, physiotherapy refers to the rehabilitation-focused care, therapeutic exercise and supportive therapies Dr. Casey provides as a chiropractic physician, not as a licensed physical therapist.

Can I see a chiropractor and a physical therapist at the same time?

Many people do, and the two can complement each other. Let each provider know about the other care you are receiving, and about any restrictions your surgeon or physician has given you, so your plans work together.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Care at KC Wellness and Physiotherapy is available without a prescription. We accept all major insurance plans. Call our office at (913) 424-2410 to confirm your coverage before your visit, or request an appointment online and our office will call you back to confirm a time.

Is either one uncomfortable?

Mild, temporary soreness is a commonly reported after-effect of both hands-on treatment and new exercise. Share your full medical history and any new or worsening symptoms, such as numbness or weakness, with your provider so care can be adjusted or you can be referred when needed.

This page is general health information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for an examination. If you have severe, sudden or worsening symptoms, seek medical care right away.
